Mountain biking, skidded on turn?

I was mountain biking on a fairly thick fireroad. Was going around a turn and I used my brakes a bit. I wasn't going very fast. My bike skid. (And I fell and got hurt.) How can I prevent this from happening again?

You might have been going to fast for the degree of the turn (even though you said you weren't going very fast) causing you to skid. Or perhaps the ground was slick. In the future you should be aware of the degree of the turn you are about to take, and be able to control the amount of skid. It is usually the back tire that will skid, and you need to use both your brakes at the same time. However this shouldn't stop you from continuing to mountain bike.
