What's the difference between free ride, cross country and all mountain?
Looking at bikes, I get what downhill and dirt jump bikes are, but what's the difference between free ride, XC, all mountain, and any other category they use?
freeride is for more BMX type stuff, it should be lighter weight for tricks.
Cross Country is meant for longer rides/races, and will probably be the most durable.
All Mountain is more for biking on an actual mountain (possibly solely for biking down it). This is close to the downhill bikes you were talking about.
If you want a bike you can ride around a city or a trail, and aren't looking at bikes for a specific purpose (i.e. if you're going on a mountain biking trip down a mountain), cross country is definitely your best bet.
