'Moulin Rouge' - Love this film!

I adore this film so much! I don't even know why tbh.

But, about 5 years ago was when I got to see it and it was on video...I didn't see it in cinema as I probably wasn't interested in it. However, I remember being in utter shock when Satine died! Even though watching it again the other night had all the obvious signs that was going to happen :D

But I thought the film was beautifully done, funny and charming all at once.

I loved it and didn't realise how beautiful Nicole Kidman is!
 
I saw it for the first time today and was utterly let down. But Nicole Kidman is fantastic and reminded me while i have always loved her. Her portrayal reminded me of Marilyn Monroe. I know that is odd but she did. I could imagine Marilyn Monroe playing this character and i recently saw a movie with her in and Nicole reminded me of her in this movie. She did Marilyn proud in doing the cover of DiamonRAB.
 
It's one of my favourites. I love Satine she is wonderfully tragic. It's a feast for the eyes and ears the whole film. I think my favourite part is Roxanne and the flashes to The Duke and Satine, very powerful.
 
I like the music and the visuals; not so keen on the plot.

I tend to side with the duke. He's the victim in all this. Satine takes him for every penny she can, and won't even sleep with him in return. Nor does she tell him how she truly feels. She leaRAB him on. Meanwhile she's sleeping with a writer. The duke is effectively supporting her, him and the rest of the cast, and gets nothing. They don't even tell him that she's dying, so his investment is bound to fail.

The duke isn't good with females. I expect he had rich parents who didn't express their emotions. He would have been sent to an all-male boarding school from an early age. His only real chance to meet women would be in bordellos. He behaved as Zidler and Satine taught him to behave. That he genuinely loved her is made clear when his eyes sparkle in the elephant scene. TowarRAB the end he does some regrettable things, but then it's a premise of the film the jealousy drives you mad.

When Satine dies at the end, that's justice. Hopefully now the duke is wiser, if poorer.
 
Amazing film (but obviously it's not a film for everyone because of it's erratic style) however I don't understand how people were shocked when satine died because Ewan McGregor says it at the very start! "My love has died". When I saw it at the cinema I thought this was clear and that the whole film would then be leading up to it.
 
I absolutely love this film - probably my favourite ever.

I just love the mixture of emotions in it, how sad the ending is but how hilariously OTT some parts are.
 
I love the film...particularly the score. Baz Luhrman is not everyones taste and this film seems to create a love / hate reaction ..splits the audience right down the middle.
 
I completely disagree. The Duke is a creep, nothing more. He was more than willing to use Satine. He cared about her not as a person but as a possession.
 
I avoided it when it was released because the hype drove me crazy.

I only saw it for the first time not that long ago but I really loved it. The cinematogrphy and the costumes and sets are amazing and the songs are brilliant.

I think Nicole Kidman was at her most beautiful in this movie.
 
it was one of the first films my fella bought for me when we first got together and holRAB special meanings for us both its a beautiful film and i cried like a baby at the end of it
 
His feelings may not have been very deep, but they were sincere. I think he was enamoured of her beauty (again, watch the elephant scene). He wanted to get to know her better, but all his attempts were thwarted. She wouldn't even turn up for a supper with him.

He was hardly using her. Apart from anything else, he didn't get the chance. He said he wanted to take her away from the brothel, make her a star, and give her a lifetime of security. He was basically a romantic. He put her on a pedestal, and didn't really understand her. There's no reason to think he wasn't sincere. There were plenty of other women he could have bought if that's what he wanted.

Regardless of what you think of the Duke, can we agree that Christian isn't any more noble? He too is overwhelmed by her physical beauty when they first meet. He's a pretty despicable character.
 
The Duke is a selfish, spoilt buffoon. Quite willing to resort to murder if he doesn't get what he wants. I saw no redeeming qualities in the man. Christian was a dreamer and idealistic but his heart was in the right place. He saw that Satine was basically a caged bird of paradise that he wanted to set free. A sad end but her heart was his. Truth, Beauty, Freedom, Love.
 
I love Moulin Rouge too. The music is fabulous. I hadn't watched it for about five years, because it reminded me of an ex, but it was on the other night and I have watched it twice since then.

My favourite piece of music is probably Bolero, which is used over the closing credits. It's beautiful. Although I do love all of the songs!

Ewan McGregor isn't too bad either!
 
When I first heard about Moulin Rouge, I only knew that Baz Lurhman had made Priscilla..and I was not all that keen on seeing that movie so I kind of wrote it off.

But then I saw a clip of the film on tv...of Ewan McGregor singing Your Song, and learning that the actors had sung their own parts...and was kind of intrigued and impressed.

So I rented it out.

In general, although I love music, I have never really been a big fan of musicals on film.

But I was captivated by the sheer musical chutzpah...the sense of 'anything goes'...and the attitude of 'why not'?

And by that I mean the vision to mix and match various well-known musical pieces in a way that on paper should just...not work at all.

But yet...it did.

I mean...T Rex Children Of The Revolution mixed with The Sound Of Music?

The highly erotic, flamenco verion of Roxanne.

Jim Broadbent's hilarious version of Madonna's Like A Virgin.

And that wonderful love song medley atop the elephant.

And I kind of understand why some people just don't get this kind of movie...because it's musical re-interpretations are just too radical.

However...I will say that as much as I love the music, I really don't think it's a particularly good movie.

The musical set pieces, the set decoration, the effects and the costumes dominate the movie to the detriment of story and acting IMO.
 
I really liked this film. I thought that it was marketed very badly and this let it down. I didn't even know it was a musical. It is such a gem - Spectalular, spectacular!
