motorcycle vs car in terms of safety?

Which one is safer and is less likely to get you in an accident? I know it depends on the driver/rider but is someone riding a motorcycle more likely to get in an accident then someone who drives a car? And when they do have accidents which one (from statistics) is more likely to result in death? I'm asking because I've become really interested recently in bikes and want to weigh the pros and cons of riding a motorcycle
