Motorcycle Insurance on a Bike I Don't Ride?

I live in Canada, Ontario and I've been planning on buying a motorcycle within the next month or two. Prices are currently very low because I live in Canada and I would assume the demand is very low since winter will soon be on its way. I think the best strategic time to buy would be right now, but a buddy of mine kind of busted my bubble when he told me that I have to pay insurance on it even if I'm not riding it, and its in a secure location.

If I buy a motorcycle, and have no plans to take it on the streets until at least early spring do I have to pay insurance for it even while its being stored? If so, will I have to pay the same amount of money as if I was riding it?

And if so, why would I have to pay insurance? If it was stolen that would only be my loss, it would be my fault and would harm no one else.

I live in the mountains where it snows a lot. But, about one day a month it melts so that I have about five miles of clear road. You wouldn't believe how good that five miles feels in the wintertime. Well worth the extra bit to keep it insured through the winter. Have fun and good luck with your new bike.
