Motorcycle build help.?

After much research and test rides, I have decided a Harley Sportster is the best bike for me considering the power I am after and comfort. If I had the money, I would buy an 883 right now. I don't want the 1200. I am interested to know if it is possible to build a sportster copy. Are the parts made/available? There are many TV shows showing people building custom choppers from parts, but you never see these builders making plain bikes. I am not interested in building something bigger than the 883 and I could care less that it says Harley all over it. Have any of you ever tried this? Any feedback (at least constructive) is welcome. Thanks.
 
You can build whatever you like, but you may spend more money and time for the parts. Consider finding a salvage bike and rebuild it. Parts would be readily available.
 
S and S makes an evo sporty motor I dont know the price.A ridgid frame from pauchco is about 800 dollars the front end about a grand,then theres tires and wheels forward controls etc.....
 
If it is like cars the parts to build a $5,000 motorcycle can cost $12,000 plus labor time and knowledge.
 
Are parts made / available. Yes and yes.
Have I tried it? No.
If you plan on a build, you may want to start with an existing bike.
For a few reasons. New is damned expensive, will cost more than a new Sportster. Another is changes in the laws that limit how many customs you can build. A bike with an existing VIN may get past, letting you build a different one later.
 
You can do it, but it will not be cost productive. There are not many manufactures who reproduce an 883 engine. You would be a lot better off buying a used 883 and rebuilding it to your style.
A new 883 is about $8000
a frame will cost you close to $1000
an engine $2000
forks and swing arm $1500-$2500
Wheels and tires $800
Paint $600+
fenders and tank $1500
levers, bars, seat, pegs controls.......$1500
