Most shocking or disturbing film?

What is the most shocking or scary or disturbing film you've seen?

For me, I'd say The Exorcist. The idea that a 12 year old girl has been possessed by a demon and how her looks, voice and personality changes drastically is quite disturbing, and then there's THAT scene with the crucifix

That film's as old as me, and still looks incredible. If anyone hasn't seen The Thing I advise giving it a go - amazing cinema.

But it's a comedy!!! Very funny film, but very sick humour.

The 2 scenes that usually come out top in these "most disturbing scenes" threaRAB are the kerb scene in American History X and the rape in Irreversible - I'd probably agree on these 2. American History X is a very good film. Irreversible is just nasty gratuitous violence.
The ending of Audition is pretty disturbing as well.

American History X for the 'kerb' scene. Scum was an extremely harsh film. A Clockwork Orange is legendary.

Nobody has mentioned I Spit On Your Grave... nasty little film. I thought Last House On The Left was severely overrated but The Virgin Spring which is an old Swedish film by Ingmar Bergman and was the basis for LHOTL was very good.

I watched Funny Games U.S last week and was impressed. I have never felt so uncomfortable watching a film, I had to look away occassionally just because it was so tense. Michael Pitt and Brady Corbett were phenomenally good. I want to see the original now.

Also, one to suggest... Audition... messed up film!

I didn't get to watch it in Film Studies lol, but quite disturbing indeed. I did laugh though when the idiot got his
penis trapped in the woman and the family had to try and get it out
ha ha.

There is only one film I have had to turn off part way through because I was so disturbed and that was Kieslowski's 'A Short Film About Killing'. Its just too realistic to watch.

That's not strictly true. The animal gets crushed to death by a Boa Constrictor. They just film it, a lot like Attenborough does. Ok, they threw the footage in a video nasty - bad idea I admit, but "they" didn't kill it. The only shocking footage is when they kill the turtle, behead it, skin it and eat it. Saying that tho, it's killed for food - not for pleasure. Hard to watch tho
