Most important Element of Communication - The Message?!?

What do you think is the most important Element of Communication? First I said written communication; lot of things in our history wouldn't exist today if it wasn't for written words like the Declaration of Independence. Or do you think it's the Non-Verbal part, in form of emotions? Also feedback is a very important element because it controls which way a conversation can go, or listening, because if you don’t listen how are you going to be able to communicate? In order to deliver a message, you would have to listen and comprehend what the source (speaker) is saying.

I'm asking because I just had a homework about it, and wonder what other people think, as we didn't really discuss it in class. I wrote that to me it's the message, because when communicating, people go off the tone of a conversation. You can really tell what a person is trying to say, or get through when you are having eye contact. Messages also can be just a gesture. Sometimes a simple gesture can mean a lot! However, I do think all are crucial - can't have one without the other, right?
