Egyptian President Muhammad Morsi has not changed his scheduled visit to Pakistan to take part in the D-8 summit despite a tragedy in his family. His younger sister Fatima died of cancer on Tuesday. The Egyptian president is also deeply involved in efforts to negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas but he still decided to proceed ahead with his scheduled visit to Islamabad.

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf while expressing sorrow over the demise of the sister of the visiting President of Egypt termed his visit a praiseworthy gesture and a mark of affection between the two brotherly countries. The Egyptian president’s sister battled cancer for ten years and her health deteriorated in the past few months. The leadership in Pakistan will offer condolence to the Egyptian president when he will be arriving here today (Thursday) in the wee hours. He is the last head of state/government to reach Islamabad for the one-day summit. The four-hour summit will commence Friday at 12.00 in the Presidency and it will conclude in the afternoon.

Well-placed diplomatic sources told The News here Wednesday that all the head of the states/governments will leave Pakistan the same evening except those of Egypt and Nigeria as they will be leaving on Friday. Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan was the first to reach Islamabad. The Egyptian president will have important discussions with the host leadership on Friday on various aspects of bilateral ties. He will address the joint sitting of Parliament on Friday. It is expected that he will throw light on the Palestinian issue in the backdrop of ongoing conflict in Ghaza. Muhammad Morsi who belongs to the Muslim Brotherhood Party would also impress upon the need for further consolidation of unity among the Muslim countries. Muhammad Morsi is the first Egyptian head of state who will address the joint sitting of Parliament in Pakistan. The two countries will also ink five agreements covering different spheres of mutual cooperation. The two sides are working out the details of the agreements, the sources said.

The sources pointed out that Milli Yakjehti Council (MYC), an alliance of religious groups under former chief of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Qazi Hussain Ahmad, would be observing protest day against Israel Friday at the same time when the Egyptian president will be addressing the joint sitting of Parliament and having formal dialogue with the leadership in Pakistan covering bilateral, regional and international issues.
