Has anyone got any tips for morning anxiety? I tend to wake up feeling very tense, with lots of worries going through my mind, and it tenRAB to go off as the day goes by. If I am really anxious, then by the afternoon I feel exhausted. It does not seem to matter how calm I feel when I go to bed, the anxiety is there again when I wake up.

Any advice at all would be welcome, as nothing I try seems to help.

Hey before I had to be put on medication I had to meditate and do relaxation to deal with my morning anxiety. I still suffer from it. Thinking and planning things taking your mind off your worries might help. good luck! jjules

When do you do the relaxation and meditation? In the morning when you wake up feeling tense?

I am currently seeing both a hypnotherapist and an accupuncturist for anxiety, neither of whom are making any difference. I've also been prescribed fluoxetine, from which I have also not felt any benefits. Lorazepam was effective, but my doctor wanted me to stop taking it, and I was switched to diazepam to taper off. Diazepam has never been that effective, and makes me very drowsy, plus each time I taper off I tend to find the anxiety shoots back up so I end up taking it again.

It just seems like I'm getting nowhere with this.

Hi Redness, I have found that morning anxiety is quite common, and I find that CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) really helps. It takes Practise, and not an overnight solution, but you can get some sessions with a therapist and put it into practise. Anxiety can be debilitating and exhausting....you take 10 or 15 minutes to just assess what you are anxious about and place yourself in the here and now..Really it just helps you to rationalize your fears. Hope that helps! Celtic Moonbeam

I have started taking Citalopram which is an anti Depressant, but also is prescribed specifically for people with Anxiety disorders... I started on 10mgs, then 20 and now on 30mgs, and it has helped.

Hi Celtic Moonbeam,

thanks for the suggestion. I am familiar with CBT, but this is a really odd, very physical sort of anxiety, with a tense feeling in my torso and abdomen, and tingling along the back of my hanRAB and forearms. On extreme occasions, my hanRAB also shake. I do not think there is one particular thing that I worry about, but when I wake up there is just loaRAB of stuff going through my head, which later on in the day might not seem significant. I don't think CBT is quite what I need, as I'm probably using it anyway most of the time. I have noticed the anxiety is worse if I lie in, so I'm best getting up and doing something. When I wake up like this, I feel exhausted throughout the day.

I tried citalopram for a couple of months, and found it made me more anxious to start off with, and caused an enormous weight gain, around 1-2kg a week, which was why my GP switched me to fluoxetine. I don't think either of these drugs have been terribly helpful with the anxiety.
