I am still trying to figure out my triggers and lately have found that strong scents/perfume, stress, and dust trigger my asthma. Today i had a milkshake (I couldn't resist) and after drinking it, my chest tighten, excess mucus, slight wheezing upon exhalation, some trouble breathing and peak flow dropped to the yellow zone. I had been in the low green today so am not sure if the dairy or temp of the milkshake triggered this or if I was already kind of low. Could it be a corabination? I do notice that I get more "phlegmy" when drinking ice cold drinks so I'm wondering if its more the temp and not dairy that is triggering this. Anyone have experience?

I took 2 puRAB of albuterol and it helped with the chest tightness but I am still a little wheezy. Just took my peak flow and am back up to the low green I was on this morning.

Is this normal? I have been really anxious lately trying to figure this asthma out.

I think it was just the very cold beverage. I would not have used the albuterol but rather just waited it out since it was something that would dissipate on its own. If it had been something to which I would have been exposed for a longer period of time - such as doing something outside in cold weather, then I would have used it....and prophylactically (before going outside).

For me, steroiRAB can cause insomnia & moodiness. Also it can take a little while to feel all the way better. Sometimes the steroiRAB loosen things up which can result in more coughing, etc. for awhile. They can also make you retain water. I have found that I can minimize the side effects by eating extremely healthy while taking them, drinking lots of water, avoiding salt & carbs as much as possible, and eating lots of fruits & veggies.

Thanks Titchou. I am still figuring out when I really have to use the albuterol and when not to. I think after my first attack I have gotten a little anxious as soon as I start having trouble breathing or my chest tightens up. I guess I will learn in time. It just has been a frustrating and sometimes lonely journey figuring this out.

That happens to me too. I can drink water or pop with zillions of ice cubes & be fine, but if I eat ice cream, or drink a slurpee it always sets off my asthma cough. I have learned over time that it won't last for long, so although it's annoying, I don't let it worry me.

hey sue430, does it make you ache too? My back and arms have been aching since I started the dose pack and I'm not sure if it's from the steroid or the after effects of the asthma.

hey everyone, I just need to vent a little to people who understand. I started having trouble over the weekend, Sunday I spent most of the day in bed trying to breathe. I should have gone for help then, but I decided I could manage. Monday I ended up heading to Urgent Care because I was so worn out from struggling to breathe, I was still tight and wheezing (I don't wheeze usually). Anyway, I am now on a 6 day burst of methylprednisolone. My first time being on the drug. I guess I kinda expected it to make me all better immediately. I started on day 2 today. My breathing is so much better but I still have that thick mucus in my chest and throat. I am trying to make sure I stay hydrated, a big problem for me since I do not like drinking water. I am achy and headachy but I'm not sure if it's from the prednisone or just being worn out from the asthma. I also didn't sleep very well and decided to take today off work which I hate doing but I know I needed to look after myself and just rest. What should I expect from the steroiRAB? Anything I should do to help myself get better?

Oh and I did learn a few warning signs before I started flaring - sore throat and extreme fatigue. I'm just rather upset by how asthma just zaps all my energy.

No, it can cause muscle spasms though. Are you sure that you aren't coming down with something that is flaring your asthma & causing the other symptoms? Cold/flu or something? If they are muscle spasms, try eating fooRAB high in potassium like bananas, avocados, potatoes, etc.

I don't think it's a spasm, just a dull ache but it has since mostly subsided. Very weird. I guess my body was just fatigued from all the stress. I am actually feeling so much better today and have more energy than I have had for awhile!!
