CONFRONTING MR. DONOVAN AFTER I FOUND YOU CRYING IN THE BATHROOM
In the Amazonian rainforest insect populations
are kept in check by parasitic fungus
that sneak their way inside the exoskeleton
and like some extraterrestrial leech,
starting with the brain, suck out the insides
of some beetle, moth, or mantis. Ants, for instance,
can tell whether another of their masses has been hit
and will cart off the wounded worker to die alone
so the biological terror cannot spread to the rest of the colony
and you can see the abandoned ant resist as its brain is taken
over
and all motor functions failing until finally losing life mid-struggle.
So it is clear when our gym teacher’s defenses of,
“All kids get teased. Just tell them to stop,”
is up and flared that he is on survival mode.
Fearful of my microbes that could cause
over-protective parents, anxious administrators,
a paranoid principal to force his resignation
so the school colony and it’s children
will not be infected by bad press and bad headlines.
So he won’t be dragged off to die alone
because for him it is survival of the fittest
and you are too weak to stop abusive classmates
who forced you to wear your stolen your gym clothes
freshly washed in in urine.
Each species of insect in the forest
comes with its own unique science fiction fungus to maintain the
balance.
Something beautiful and otherworldly that will at some point
swallow the creature from the inside out.
I gnash brain after brain felling faculty and administration
making sure your fruits and forest floor that shelter and feed me
do not fall further prey to the military masses of adolescent insects
preying on you like parasites until your canopy collapses.
