im 27 year old female with persistent, but i guess relatively mild/moderate acne. ive tried topicals in the past, as well as retin A and minocycline. each provided temporary relief, but i continue to have breakouts (almost always have some kind of breakout, maybe 1-2 days per month - if that- do i have clear skin). Anyway, i talked to the dr in the past about accutane and he said not until we try everything else. now that ive tried all this other stuff im goign to go talk to him about it again. my questions are these:

- can i tan at all while on accutane? i dont mind cutting back from what i do now (a few timse per week), but i cant imagine stopping all together?

- is the initial breakout correlated with how bad your acne already is? (ie. really bad acne, really bad initial outbreak....mild acne, mild initial outbreak?)

- would i be better with low dose treatment?

thanks.

You cannot tan at all while on accutane. Actually, you have to take extra precautions to avoid the sun and tanning at all.
The initial breakout is different for everybody. It has nothing at all to do with how bad your acne is. If you have mild acne, you shouldn't take accutane.
As for your dose, I have no idea. It's up to your derm.

good luck!!

You may not be in the sun while on accutane. If you do... it's recommended to use spf 45. We had to postpone the start of my son's accutane as we were just leaving for a 2-week camping trip on a river with tons of sun.

My son's Doctor (Dermatologist) prescribes a 10 day antibiotic regimine that started the same day my son started accutane. He said it helps to minimize the breakout that some get when starting accutane. My son did not have any breakout what-so-ever so I have to attibute this to the anibiotics.

I say take the regular treatment and be done with it. it's about 5 or 6 months long.

The only thing you need to be very aware of is that you should not take accutane if there is any chance what-so-ever that you could become pregnant. If you get pregnant while on accutane, it will cause birth defects.

I've been dealing with cystic/nodular cystic acne for about 5 years now. Absolutely nothing has worked, all of the over the counter creams, washes, and masks haven't helped one bit. I am making an appointment with a dermatologist, I know first he's going to try and prescribe me Differin, but I've already tried that and it didn't work (of course) and I refuse to start antibiotics because not only will it NOT cure the problem, but I don't want to be forced to take them forever, also causing antibiotic resistance. I'm desperate to start accutane, so do you think it'd be possible to just lie and tell my dermatologist that I've already tried antibiotics for my acne before like Doxyciline or tetrocycline? Or will he look at my medical history and find out that I'm fibbing to him. I just don't want to waste any money, I've already counted up all of the vitamins, pills, and face washes and products I've used and I came up with 72. I just don't want to hassle with anything else, so please help me out! Is it possible to tell him that?

Fibbing to your doctor I don't think will benefit you since he will have all of your recorRAB at hand. I'm sure if you explain to them your frustration and concerns you will be able to get a prescription for accutane. I have been suffering from moderate acne for about five years and even though I don't get cysts, I was recently prescribed.
Although, even if you can convince your dermatologist to agree, it is at least a month long process to get the prescription if you are a girl.

Hi. I too have acne and have tried everything. I am starting to think that my doctor doesn't really understand acne as I have heard that acne is related to diet and he keeps telling me that it isn't. I emailed the nutrionist who wrote spotless the essential guide to getting rid of spots and acne and she has really been helping me. My skin is a lot better than it has been and I am not using any lotions I am just changing what I eat. I think you should try something like this too. Just a thought. AB
