if i was to hand my notice in at my job today after lunch could i leave to start my new job on the 14th april? to me this is a month! and would my boss alow me to leave on that date of technicaly could he ask me to stay anothe week after the 14th?
in my contract it says a month either side

yes you could leave.he may ask you to work but you wont have to he can not make you

When you hand in your notice it takes effect from midnight that you hand it in. If it says 1 months notice and you hand it in on the 14th of March, you would have to work up to and including the 14th of april. You would have to work it, unless you employer said other wise. If your employer asked you to leave early and not work your notice he would still ahve to pay you for the remaining notice period. Also you can serve out your notice while on the sick or tkae holiday during your notice period. If you decided not to work your notice period, and your employer wishes you to work it, he could take you to civil court for breech of contract and claim for how he has been financhally inconvienced (eg had to get a temp in for that time, could claim the cost of the temp)

Based ok UK Legislation

two weeks is standard sufficient notice. anything more and you're just being nice, as far as i'm concerned.

You'd better check your contract first. Do you get paid four weekly or by calender month?
If you get paid by calendar month you might find that you have to stay until the end of the month following your notice. So if you hand in your notice today you may not be able to leave until the end of April.
If you get paid four weekly you will only have to work for four more weeks.
On the positive side they may ask you to leave today.

Depends on what's written in your contract.
Normally it's between 2 weeks/1 month.
