Monster 696 vs. Hypermotard 1100

Make sure you get something with a seat that you can both fit on, like a banana seat.

The 1098 really sucks for taking people on. I thought my 600RR was bad but that is a dream compared to taking my gf on the back of my 1098.

yeah, it's just cruel and unusual to put someone up there. same as my R1. they're 10 ft off the ground strapped to a plank like a fly stuck to a rocket.

the SS has been great for the occasional 2-up canyon run.

I am looking for something fun that I can go 2up on. Won't be taking it on long trips just around town and don't really need to carry anything. Brands I wouldn't consider are Aprilia and MV Agusta as well as Japanese bikes. Price is open up to about 13k. I'm not sure if I like my gf enough to let her "Learn" on a ducati. She can't even drive a manual car lol. I wouldn't put my love through that torture (and I mean the bike).

you dont want a japanese bike, nor an mv or a aprilia.?

You axed off a pretty good chunk of bikes there

I know my buddies s2r is great around town/2up but I dont have experience with much else. Id go check out a Triumph speed triple.

The Monsters would be a blast for around town and the cheapest would be more than adequate. Seat would be fine for two up for that purpose. You should be able to test ride these if you have a 1098. That would give you room to play with customization in the price. The GT1000 would be more comfortable. I have seen used bikes under warranty go for $7500. The Hyper would be good too, and is a blast to ride and wheelie, you sit on top instead of in the bike.

Triumph can offer a Bonnie and you could even get into a ST which opens the possibility of longer trips in the future and would compliment the 1098. It has detachable bags. The Speed Triple is a brute and the intake snort is intoxicating. The seat wouldn't be that good for two up (much better than a 1098 though) but

Harley really can't bring anything to the table to compare in that price range.

Your dealer support is very important. I wanted a Duc for years but the local dealer was a complete mess in every way. Sales, support and service were all at rock bottom and digging and I didn't do anything but look until a very good dealership opened up about 50mi away.

Karl,
Thanks for the info. I was considering an ST for longer trips since I am not looking for a sportbike, just something fun for 2 without risking my jewels. What do you think about Moto Guzzi?

I've never owned one, but have test rode them. A guy I ride with has the cruiser version. I've heard they are maintenance pigs, but only from non owners and consider the shit you hear about Ducs from non owners .
They are heavy and down on power, especially when you add in the losses crank to wheel (about 15%) from a shaft drive, but hp isn't as crucial on a fun bike for putting.

Also didn't mention the new Beemer F 800 ST or R 1200 R. The 800 ST is belt drive and R 1200R shaft. The suspension on the R will give you a very comfy ride, F 800 is comparable to the baby monster in price if you don't option it up. For that matter, the Buel Ulysses is a fun bike to ride, but definitely ends up in the shop a lot, according to some long term tests by the motorcycle rags.

You should be able to get test rides on any Beemer, most dealers offer them, also the Ducatis, and hopefully the MG.

Hi chief, newbie here. Just sold my s4r and looking out for another bike probably the hyper 796. After reading this thread though, I'm having 2nd thoughts. Would the 696 be more comfortable than the 796 for me and my backride? I thought otherwise because of the hyper's upright riding position, aptc clutch, even seat for me and backride, lower seat height.

To the thread starter, which bike did you get?happy?
