...0.618 gm of mercury metal? When a 0.667 gm sample of mercury oxide is heated, 0.618 gm of mercury metal remains (Do not attempt this experiment!)

a) What is the mole ratio of mercury to oxygen in the sample?

b) What is the empirical formula of mercuric oxide.

mass of HgO0.667(given)
mass of Hg0.618(given)
moles of Hg0.00308( / atomic weight Hg)
mass of O0.049 ( subtract the weight of H from the weight of HgO)
moles of O0.00306 ( divide mass of O by 16)

we can see the number of moles of O and Hg in HgO are equal

Molar ratio = 1:1

empirical formula HgO
