Modeling Clay For Jewellery Making?

I have recently purchased modelling clay with the idea of making my own clay jewellery. But now, after reading more about clay jewellery, I fear I have the wrong type of clay. Is it necessary to use Sculpey/Polymer clay for jewellery? How can I make the most of the modelling clay that i have? Also, is there a technique to harden the clay apart from baking? Is sun-drying helpful?
