Mobile IM Data Charges for Fido?

I'm kind of new to the concept of a data plan/charges. My provider is Fido, and my phone (the new sony ericsson) has mobile IM on it. I've looked at my usage and it doesn't detect any data usage, but i'm not sure if it's just lagged and that using mobile IM would lead to data charges?
