MLA in text citations...is it only with direct quotes?

Ok, I'm doing a research paper on a subject I'm somewhat new to, therefore all my facts are borrowed from my sources. If I'm not directly quoting a fact, do I still have to include in text citations?

Also, when they say a direct quote from the source, are they talking about a direct quote from a person? Or is anything taken from the book word by word considered a direct quote?

Please answer all questions. I'm on limited time. Thanks in advance!
