Missing SOME desktop icons on Windows XP Media Edition?

Hey guys, recently when i turned on my PC some of the desktop icons went missing. Also some icons in My Computer, My Documents, etc went missing-Some of these are customized icons, some of these are default icons, e.g. the Local Disk C drive icon was missing. I tried several methods like the Task Manager method and right- clicking on the desktop>properties>customize desktop and selecting the icons and it worked for a microsecond 0_0 before it automatically refreshed itself and got rid of the icons. Does anyone know of any methods? It would be of great help and I shall try all of them before asking again.
