MiniSD/MicroSD memory cards - Size vs Speed

Hi everyone. I'll be getting a N73 soon and wanted to get a memory card for it. I know that it takes a MiniSD card. My question is:

Do larger cards effect speed?

More specifically, will a 2GB card make my phone seem any slower than a 1GB or less? What has been your experience?

Thank you in advance for any and all contributions you can make on this topic.

P.S.> I did a forum search before starting this thread

It all depends on the card manufacturer. ATP is the best, but currently their MicroSD's only go up to 1GB. You can compare the specs on the cards to see that they have the fastest read/write speeds. That's where you're going to see a difference. A card with faster read/write speeds will help your phone stay snappy.

Personally, at this point in the game, I'd get a MicroSD with a MiniSD adapter, if I were you. Reason being look at the newer devices coming out. N95, E90, etc all take MicroSD, afaik. Thus to prevent having to get a new card with each phone, if you get a MicroSD with the appropriate adapter, you're covered for a little while.

I've used Patriot and Transcend MicroSD in my recent devices and didn't have a problem.

Thank you Mr. Cadden

All very interesting to me. I agree it may be wise to get a MicroSD for future compatability (and use an adapter). I'll do some research on speeds.

I looked on eBay to buy a 2GB chip - they were anywhere from 10 - 40 bucks shipped with big brand names like SanDisk and Kingston. Also saw PQI, TOPRAM, and A-Data. Good to know that ATP, Patriot and Transcend have been successful.

Now, if I can find a good deal, I'm sold. Know of any?

I recently purchased my 2GB MicroSD from Meritline.com and was very pleased. $33.99 shipped to my door. But that didn't come with the Micro-to-Mini adapter. You could do that and pick up one of the adatpers on ebay for ~$7, or look further for better packaging. Earlier this year (I think at CES) it was announced that MicroSD cards would begin shipping with the MicroSD card, a Micro-to-Mini adapter, and then a Mini-to-SD adapter.

Yeah I saw that! On the SanDisk site, they list a "Mobile Memory Kit" in 512MB, 1GB and 2GB variants that include a chip and the two adaptors mentioned above. The new "kit" has the same part number as the old "kit" that only included the chip and a Micro to SD adaptor. So they basically just added an adapter (Micro to Mini). I'm really glad they are doing that, its pretty cool.

Any experience with PNY memory? The reason I ask is CompUSA has a sale this week with a 2GB MicroSD chip and Micro to SD adaptor for $27.99

if you can pay alil extra for a atp card trust me...it comes with everything youll ever need...
a usb reader, sd to mini, and mini to micro!! its a cool pkg.

Yep. A friend of mine who owns a cell phone store recently purchased a case of 20 PNY chips. We've tried them on N73s with no problems whatsoever. It comes with a year's warranty.

They are a big brand when it comes to graphic cards and computer memory. No reason they shouldn't make good sd memory also.

I think...
Smaller cards cost less energy for users and less production cost for manufacturers..
That's what I think.

Smaller card's speed will eventually gain over time.

Manufacturer's suggestion??
I would recommend San-Disk
I have 2 gb Ultra II mini-SD bought in Hongkong. Speed's OK with my N93, Superb on my laptop's card reader.
But when it was totally failure, the company here in US is still willing to replace it.
They're the best! No wonder the price here is

I actually STRONGLY disagree with this. Nokia made cards have a history of being LESS stable than most of the aftermarket cards out there.

If you've been using S60 phones long enough, you remember the debacle of all the Nokia DV RS-MMC cards corrupting with use (happened all the time on the 668x and the 6630) to the point where people had to get replacement cards from Nokia.

Not to mention that the Nokia ones are outrageously overpriced vs the rest of the market.

Sorry, I don't know Spanish. The Altavista Babelfish translated your post as "Hello, it wanted to know if you have proven the memory of 2gb marks Kingston in the N73 and since she has gone to them"

I haven't been able to try any chips in an N73 yet, but I know that other people on the boards have.
