What is the best way to keep ammonia levels, and nitrite levels at that point, down during the nitrogen cycle? I pretty much know water changes and limited feeding but are they okay for the fish in my tank? My ammonia level has only reached 1.0 but I think that may be dangerous as my tank is at alkaline PH levels. Should I attempt to lower PH or just continue constant water changes and monitor my ammonia levels until the essential bacteria takes care of it?
Please don't suggest fishless cycling as I am alreadty 2 weeks in with fish and cannot store them anywhere else. Also I'm not obsessed with animals to the point that I'm willing to wait a month to get fish. I do however care enough to minimize effects. Even though most of my fish were only 1$, they don't deserve to suffer and die.
