right, my mini is going into its mot tomorrow and im worried about a bit of rust on the door sills, its more than 12" from the seat belt mount point so that part will be ok as far as the mot is concerned, but is there a subframe at the front which could also fail on the mot because of the rust, the rust in nearly bang on in the middle of the upper part of the sill, sorry if this is a little hard to understand, and thanks in advance

Stoo73 suggested the mot tester would be hitting it with an hammer I hope not it is finger and thumb pressure only. Only the corrosion assesment tool is allowed to be used by the mot tester and then it is only to be used for scraping ie of or surface rust and it can only be used for light tapping to listen for the sound it makes on metal.

Remember for the subframe to fail on corrosion it has to be excessively corroded.

Mini subframes are often a cause of MOT failures, however if it is only surface rust then you should be alright.

The MOT guy will of course start hitting the subframes with a hammer to check the level of corrosion.

New subframes aren't that expensive, but can be difficult to fit.

the best way to combat rust (assuming it is only surface based), it to clean the metal using a wire brush, then paint it and either coat it with underseal or get the car waxoiled.

front sub frames usually last forever as they are most often covered in oil from the engine, rear sub frames rust like a been can on a beach and will fail if neglected, replacement is expensive and time consuming and therefore must often reason for scraping the car Both sills must be free from rust holes as they give the car its strength, surface rust wire brush and apply rust remover and repaint
