Military: Offensive when civilians salute?

I am a civilian with great respect for the men & women who have and are serving our country in the military.

I work with several vets, and one of my ways of acknowledging people while walking down the hallway is to perform a crisp salute. It's not to be funny per se, but it is a way I've found to break up the monotony of shaking hands or just asking "how you're doing". I realized that I was saluting some of our vets, and wanted to make sure it's not crossing some boundary.

Is this offensive to those of you who've served?
Lets play- I just now reviewed the answers after asking my question, and I'm not hurt by those saying I shouldn't salute. I realized recently that it may not be appropriate considering that I work with, and have huge respect for, veterans.

Thanks to all for honest answers, and keep them coming. I will seriously consider all sincere answers, and modify how I act.
