Military, enlisted vs. officer?

I am interested in joining either the Army or Navy branches-active duty for more than just one term. I do have a master's degree, yet I am not convinced that a job as an commissioned officer from the start is right for me, nor do I think that it makes me automatically qualified. Due to experience level (over educated and under qualified, so to speak) and job interests, I would rather do more technical, hands on work than manage from an office desk. I also want a choice on my job, preferably in mechanics or avionics. Every recruiter I talk to directs me to an officer recruiter, but I want to make the best choice for myself. I am not interested in the difference in pay, living situation, yada yada. I have been there done that.

Is it common for someone in my situation to start off enlisted? I am more concerned with the age difference than anything.

What are some of the differences between officer positions and enlisted positions? Surely, enlisted personnel gain leadership experience, as well. Is warrant officer, albeit in a number of years after enlisting, a better route to go if I want to keep a more specialized/technical job?
