military dog tags.... Advice please. ASAP?

i want to buy my friend a dog tag because she has a dream to be in the army.
i asked another question about 10 minutes and i reply i got was
"why would you buy a non military service member a dog tag.. boy oh boy"

Is it a really bad choice / idea to do that? is it like unrespectful or something?
would like to know before i buy it please.
my friend wants to wear it because its there dream to be in the army, there high up in cadets atm and then going to a army college. i thought it would be a nice idea, thought they would like it.
 
You mean disrespectful, and no. Dog tags are used to identify your dead body and your religious preference. There's nothing wrong with a civilian having them.
 
It's not a bad choice and you seem nice to your friend. There are a couple of sites that you can buy from just search for military dog tags or something like that.
