Military Death & American Flag Respects Question.?

A member of my family has recently died who was 28 years Navy, something like 5 Air Force and a few weeks Army. All over the place. Sergeant when he died. Well respected.
He recently completed a tour in Iraq and brought back American flags that were flown there. Funeral is Friday and I'm wondering if it would still be considered disrespectful - or something - to the flag if his family members and friends all signed it, in his memory.

From a military standpoint, considering his status and the reason why the flag would be written on, what are your thoughts? Is this still seen as disrespectful, or would it be a great way to show respect?
