Military base - government movers?

I'm about to move on-base and I've never had the government move us before. What should I expect? Should go ahead and start packing anything on my own? Will they pack AND unload for us? Any details would be great, as I'm really clueless on this...

Thanks!

Are you about to move into barracks (UEPH) or to family housing that is on-base?

If the former, I do not have an answer.

If the latter, then you should have either contacted or have been contacted by the Joint Personal Property Shipping Office (JPPSO; pronounced "Jipp-so"). If JPPSO is handling the move, then a civilian moving company will be contracted to not only pack everything but to also transport and unload everything.

If you pack anything yourself, the moving team may make a note about that. Any damage to those things will not be covered by the insurance that comes with a JPPSO move.

HINT: If a JPPSO move, inventory everything! If anything is on the truck and NOT on the inventory list, make sure you make the necessary corrections. Anything that is not listed during packing will not be covered if it just happens to be mysteriously missing at the unloading. You are the boss during a JPPSO move. If you see anything that you don't like, e.g., packing processes, handling of large items, vague discriptions on the inventory, or if you smell alcohol on the breath of anyone on the moving team...tell the team leader to STOP immediately. You then (immediately) contact the JPPSO office with your concerns.

You really need to contact the local JPPSO office. They'll tell you everything you need to know for a move.

NOW...if your opting for a DItY (Do It Yourself) move, you do all the work, from finding the truck, acquiring the dolly, pads, etc., paying for fuel, packing, loading, and unpacking. You will be given a reimbursement for your expenses.

There should have been a place on the check out list to at least visit the JPPSO. There they usually give you a packet. The name of the packet the last time I moved was called, "It's Your Move."

You really need to contact the local JPPSO office. They'll tell you everything you need to know for a move.

Good luck.

The government doesnt move you they hire professionals to do it. Anything you pack yourself is not covered by the insurance so if you break it forget it then. So you are better off just getting organized for the move. When you get to the new base, they will unpack your things.

Go through and pull out everything you need to take with you, clothes, shoes, important paperwork, etc.. Even things that you will need right away or after they come like a shower curtain/rings, towels, sheets, pillow, blow up mattress, etc...

Take down all pictures, art, decorations from the walls and put them in one location.

Unplug all electronics and wrap the cords with them (even color code them). Take pictures of them working and write down the serial numbers in a book.

Take pictures of important things besides the electronics like art work, appliances, etc... so that if you have to make a claim you have proof they were not damaged before the move.

Make sure the garbage is taken out the days the movers are there, they will pack that.

Provide the movers with water, soda pop, snacks during the day. Just show them courtesy, stay out of the way as well.
