Mild acid rebound switching from Nexium to Pepcid = normal?

I'm on my 4th day of taking Pepcid (20 mg at 6 a.m., 20 mg at noon, and 20 mg at 6 p.m. as of tomorrow, but was taking 20 mg at 6 a.m. and 20 mg at 6 p.m.). I was on Nexium for six years, but GI doc wanted me to d/c it ASAP and try to go to an H2 blocker and strict GERD diet. The Pepcid is working 80% of the time, but it seems every other day to wear off early afternoon and I am getting some mild-to-moderate (but annoying) rebound heartburn.

Will this pass? I'm following all the rules of the GERD diet, and going back on a PPI is not an option in my case.

Hopefully it will pass - in the mean time, keep a few Tums or Gaviscon in your pocket, and suck 2 of them when the symptoms break through.

Hang in there Keecas!

My rebound lasted over three months. You may be able to take Pepcid twice a day rather than just once. I found out that Zantac (another H2 blocker) twice a day worked better for me than the Pepcid. Your rebound may get worse before it gets better, so hang in there.

I am impressed by your doctor's efforts to help you switch from a PPI to an H2 blocker.

If you read through these posts, you will find much good advise from others. I started a thread (now closed) back in January titled "Getting off PPI's and acid rebound." You may want to read through it to see how my symptoms progressed and what I did to ease the rebound symptoms.

SounRAB like you are doing quite well for only four days. But in my own experience the rebound symptoms really hit about a week off PPI's. I guess there may be a bit left in the system for a few days that is overlapping with the H2 blocker. Perhaps you will be one of those lucky ones who does not experience much rebound. I hope that is the case. Regardless, my thoughts are with you.

Keecas:

I was just curious and if it is not a great intrusion on your privacy, why did your GI doctor want you to DC your PPI ASAP?

I was wondering if his advise had something to do with all the new information now coming out on the potential adverse side effects with long term PPI use.

My experience has been the opposite of yours. That is, I have had doctors pushing these pills on me. I got myself off my PPI (Aciphex) entirely on my own and without medical support whatsoever.
