I have been having severe migraines and my doc recently put me on Topamax. I started at 25 mg. every night and am up to 50 mg. at night but have not noticed any improvement. How long does it take before this drug starts to help with the headache pain? I think the goal is for me to go up to 100 mg, but I was hoping to get some relief before I hit that does.
Can anyone who has taken Topamax for migraines give me any insight?

Thanks!!

Topomax is an antiseizure medication and can take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks to have enough in your system for it to make a difference. I did not do well with Topomax but am now on Depakote instead.

coping1: migraines are in the same catagory as seizures even though alot of people don't think so. That's why seizures meds are given to try to help with them. One thing I can offer to you is to get your toxic and non-toxic elements tested. I had mine done through a hair analysis. I found out that I was low in magnesium and selenium. Magnesium is helpful in combating migraines. You could also get your vitamin levels checked and possibly increase your Vit B6 and B12. They help with the nervous system.

If you're a caffeine drinker, caffeine depletes the magnesium in you. Other sources of magnesium are nuts, dark chocolate, green vegetables and salmon. Increase your omega 3's as well.

See if the migraines are happening more right before, during and after your menstrual cycle. Keep track of them on the calendar and also see if they happen around the New moon and the Full moon.

Look for triggers in foods that could be causing this too. Some people can't have foods with MSG in them. Get an allergy test done to see if you've got any allergies that could be triggering them.

I read on these boards that Topomax increases your chances of getting kidney stones, so beware. I wish you luck.
