I want to make a motorcycle frame some day (I know it would be cheaper to order from a catalog), but the choices on spending money on tools and material are confusing.

DOM or Chromolly, tig or mig.

and when I look at tigs and migs on craigslist, the prices are all over the place.

What should someone be looking for.

From what I have read, DOM is a good material (used in Nascar, easy to find, cheaper) People use Mig is looks like for that. Is mig easier and cheaper as well? If so, what kind of specs should I look for?

Thanks to all.
Jeff, you asked a question like this once I'm sure. do you get where I am going with that?
I have built three motorcycles and done some stick welding to get me by. I really don't know anything about welding, but it is no reason to tell someone they should never learn..that kind of thing, you two guys can suck it.

Everyone is saying Tig but I'm sticking with Mig. I have a smaller one which is perfect for frames. It's a Miller 120v that cost 1300$ with tank and very expensive electronic mask. Although there are cheaper packages. With the gas set up it is super easy to use. I've built tons of minibikes, go karts, rebuilt the front end of my atv from scratch, tons of repairs and projects. I've never used a tig but have seen people using them and from what I understand they do require that extra bit of skill to be used. You need to hold a rod hold, the welder and hit a pedal for heat control all while trying to focus and hold your work in place.

I would go with TIG, but definitely check out rental places in your area. A good TIG welder is not cheap...what am I saying! If you knew anything about welding you wouldn't be asking this question! Hire a qualified welder for your motorcycle before you hurt yourself!

TIG - initial reaction response.

However - more info is needed to answer properly. Will it be an aluminum or steel frame, etc???
