Microsoft Word for Mac - Line break issue?

I'm using Word 2008 for Mac, and I have a really annoying problem. The automatic setting for line breaks (in Format --> Paragraph --> Spacing) is Before: 0pt, After: 10pt. (Meaning there's an automatic space between each new line.) I change the "After" to 0pt every time, but every time I open a new document, it reverts back to the automatic setting. How can I fix it permanently?
