Microsoft Office and Windows Media Player issues?

I have suddenly been having some issues with Microsoft Office and with Windows Media Player.
I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook PC running Windows Vista.
I do have the Geek Squad "Black Tie" assistance, however would like to know if there's anything I can do without having to have someone come into my place...
Microsoft Office (already installed, registered, and run since I bought the computer) is now giving me an error code of "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."
I can open any music file in WMP still, and visualizations will play, however video will not. Audio for any video will be there, but no picture nor visualization. Any video played via YouTube (or the like) works fine, however any installed program on my computer will not play any video file. For example, when attempting to open a .mpg file in VLC Player, an error code comes up saying "The application has failed to start because it's side-by-side configuration is incorrect." The same error code comes up when attempting to open in DivX Player and Quicktime.
I have a current full subscription to Norton 360, and have a scheduled daily quick virus/spyware scan (which will automatically fix any errors), as well as a full-system scan scheduled every 2 days.
Is there any way that I could restore the computer back to like a week ago or something? And how would I do this? I need step-by-step help here!! lol
Everything worked until a few days ago!
I can't get into Control Panel... it gives me the side-by-side configuration crap too!! >:(
