Hello, I am new to the board am a little concerned after reading all of the issues people have had after surgery. I scheduled for a microdisctectomy on Sept 15 and very nervous about the healing process. Can anyone give me piece of mind that this surgery may give me my life back.

Rebecca-

After I had my first microdiscectomy for a large herniated disc, I was in heaven! I walked out of the hospital that same night totally pain free. I had a large herniated disc that caused my pain to radiate down my leg. I was pregnant at the time so surgery was really my only option ( I could not take many medications). The recovery was nothing at all for me. I was a tiny bit soar at the incision site, but nothing compared to the leg pain.

I unfortunately started having pain again about a year later. My disc herniated for a second time and I had to have the same surgery again. I have lots of nerve damage now. I have learned that I have Degenerative Disc Disease and I honestly believe being pregnant (my kiRAB are 18 months apart), played a huge role in my back issues.

I wish you the best of luck in your surgery. As I stated above, I walked out of the hospital that same night totally out of pain.

I doubt anyone on this board could give you that reassurance. Since you used the word "MAY" I would feel comfortable telling you that this might happen. However, I would caution you that spinal surgery never promises to return you to the way you were prior to ever developing "back problems." If you are very lucky, you MAY end up getting some pain relief from the procedure.

I would also inquire if you have tried all other conservative treatments and have made every attempt to heal? Surgery, however "micro" it may be, should always be considered as a last resort. Back surgery is a bit different from other kinRAB of surgeries. There are so many nerves that feed into the spinal column and as a result, there are many things that can go wrong.

Surgery definitely has its time and place, but you need to be sure you have exhausted your other possibilities. Have you gotten a second opinion from another spinal specialist?

Some doctors are too quick to tell you how easy it will be and how fast you'll be able to get back to your normal level of activities and return to work. They make it sound like a simple procedure, particularly the "micro" surgeries. I guess for some people it does turn out to be relatively easy. But many others live to regret their decision. I'm not saying you shouldn't go ahead with it. I just want you to know what you're entering into, so you do it with your eyes wide open!!

I had my surgery at the end of July. I feel SO much better. Just taming the sciatica pain, was worth everything. Prior to surgery, I could not function doing daily activities. I don't know if I will ever be 100% again, but at least I can work and play somewhat! I still have nurabness in my right foot and my right calf muscle gets really stiff. I will take that. My daily pain level is now only about a 2. For me, this was the best decision.

I appreciate everyones honesty on the situation. If the only thing I get out of the surgery is more managable pain levels then it is worth it, It has been approx 2 1/2 years since my disc herniated and I am at my witts end with the pain. I am tierd of taking pain meRAB regularly, most people take the small things in life for granted like rolling over in bed. If I can do that again I will be satisfied with the results. It helps a great deal to speak with people that can understand and sympathize with what I am going through.
Thank you again.
