I've tried all the stuff about making sure the mute box is not checked. I've done the reinstall your driver software for the Realtek AC97. I've gone through this:

To set up microphone options
The audio input line may be selected.(MINE DOES NOT HAVE THIS OPTION)

Open Speech in Control Panel.
On the Speech Recognition tab(OR THIS OPTION), click Audio Input, and then click Properties.
Select either Use automatically chosen line or Use this audio input line. (THIS ONE EITHER)

Use automatically chosen line sets the input line to a default that is determined by the speech system. Because of differences in drivers, capabilities and languages used, there might be variances in the selected option. The selected default may not work with all options. If the device line does not work properly, you should manually select a new line using Use this audio input line.

Use this audio input line allows you to select another line for audio input. The options present all audio line possibilities for the system. Not all audio lines are supported for speech.
Notes

To open a Control Panel item, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click the appropriate icon.

I am about tired of messing with this headphone/mic set. I have gotten it to work a few times randomly on my desktop, but like I said it was random. I've owned it for 3 years now. Bought it new. There was nothing I was doing specifically to make it work. I have had other headphone/mics and they won't work either. The headphone/mic set is made by Cyber Acoustics. The headphones part works, the mic does not. There is no software to go with the headset/mic. I've been on C.A.'s web site and looked it up. I'm trying to learn German and I really need to use the mic. Please someone help me. Oh yeah, I am using WindowsXP I have Service packs 1,2 &3 on it.(I'm pretty sure) I update regularly.
tried the wiggling, no help. Bad Jack...you might be on to something. Why is it when I do Mic boost it hums in the headset like it's really picking up sound?
just plugged the pink plug into the yellow jack and nothing.
Delmer, aren't they supposed to be color coded? I have pink for mic and green for headphones. then there is a yellow jack on the side there too.
