Messenger bag or backpack?

My North Face "BIG SHOT" is starting to "give in." It's lasted me a really long time, and i think it was worth it. My mom said it's time i get a new bag for school. I am very big on fashion and love it, but I"m also highly devoted to my studies, since my "man bag" (as my mom calls it) is not big enough for school i need something more substantial.
My "man bag as my mom calls it" is Chanel and I love it. however, i've been looking at the Newer coach messenger bags and love them as well. Here's my question.
Are messenger bags good for school, like can they carry books? (i do have a locker and can get to it, but i got it because my mom ordered me to because she bought me an expensive coat.) Would you say messenger bags are good? I like them a little more in terms of looks, but school does come first, if they aren't good, and they are inconvenient, then maybe i shouldn't get one? *NOTE* I also loved my North Face Big shot, and my chanel "purse thing whatever you want to call it." Would a coach messenger bag be a nice mix between the two?

i personally have a tote bag and i think it's great. the only downside is that it hurts your shoulder after a while and they actually become lopsided. and i used to have a backpack but, like you, i am big on fashion and they don't quite do it for me. but yeah, the coach messenger bags are super cute, and totally worth it - much better than a backpack! hope i helped! :]
