Message App. On The Blink!! Can't Recieve Mail.

Hi...I opened a message from a friend today and my message app closed. When I tried to open it again it was totally blank. When I tried to compose a message I recieved this: Sorry! The application Messages (process com.android.mms) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force close. Advice from a forum suggested I clear the messages which I did. I restated my phone and I noticed one new message had been sent but I cannot retrieve it...I still can't compose a message either...what has happened to my phone? Thankyou.

PS I have a HTC Desire HD...apps; Android games, Hotmail, Gmail, Google etc.
