They are mechanically the same: the styling, interior, and options set them apart. The powertrain however, is Ford/Mazda engineering: there's nothing in it that was made by Toyota. Ford pays Toyota a licensing fee for very specific hybrid technology, but they developed their own hybrid system themselves, and own over 100 patents that are unique to their system. The Ford/Mercury/Mazda hybrid system has full time 4wd for hybrid driving, whereas the engine in the Toyota has to be running all the time when you're in 4wd mode. Additionally, the Ford/Mazda technology results in their vehicle having the highest mpg rating of any hybrid SUV.
