Menstrual cycle, hormones, and acne!?

I'm 20 years old and suffer from moderate breakouts. My acne isn't severe but rather constant more or less. It consists of whiteheads and small-medium size cysts. My mom has suffered with fairy severe cystic acne her whole life, in her 40's she still struggles with it but hasn't yet come across a solution or explanation as to why. Im wondering if it has anything to do with maybe a hormonal imbalance of some sort. I'm "backwards" in some of the female aspects. When i'm on my period, my skin is the clearest it has been all month. Same when i was pregnant, clear skin. Also, milk and any other dairy products will usually cause a breakout. (maybe the hormones in the products?)
If someone could possibly explain to me the menstrual cycle, your hormones before, during, and after. I don't want to have acne for the rest of my life as it seems to be destined that way. Thank you so much for any help.
