-Memorial-
I am surprised at myself.
I am surprised to find that the once
Paramount dreams and life-or-death
Decisions are trivial now, quite...
Transparent.
I believe that I broke myself open for your
Peace of mind. I believe I put you
Past the mark of civility and common
Courtesy, and no, it wasn't just for you...
I know that it was also for me.
I dare to think that I understand a part of
Why loving someone and venturing forth for
His or her regard is demoralizing and
Painful: We must be willing to put the things
For which we despise ourselves on display; all
The little habits
That keep us awake at 4:15 a.m., when we're
Afraid the alarm clock will go off and
The other alarm won't stop going off and
Hitting "Snooze" is no longer
And option...
Because if you cover up the cracks and
Rusted bolts, it will be as if
Your favorite person fell in love with
Your senior picture and never saw
That you got there through a lot of
Embarrassing middle school candids.
We show our most unhealthy ingredients...
Bravely present our weak merits
Side by side with the well-preserved flaws,
To at last look oneself in the eye
With the half-solemn conclusion
That eighty-one
Percent of one's conclusions were off-track.
