Meditation and positive thinking--are they unhealthy suppression?

I've been rather stressed lately and decided to try meditation. I meditated for 20 minutes and it was only after doing so that I felt at peace and able to get my work done. However, the stress was obviously still there as evidenced by my boiling rage and profanity when I later ran into traffic.

My concerns are that meditation and positive self-talk only temporarily brainwash and don't deal with stress. I tried to reason myself through the bad traffic, but it was like keep a volcano from erupting. On one hand, the eruption would be a bad thing, but keeping it constrained seems bad as well.

I guess I'm trying to figure out how to deal with my stress (including frustration toward myself) without feeling like I'm suppressing or brainwashing. Tips?
