I understand the so-called Sweating Sickness that struck England in the late 15th century through the 16th was hyperhidrosis. however, this is essentially excess perspiration and is not at all fatal on its own, even when combined with the medical practice of blood-letting that was used.

What was the cause of the Hyperhidrosis? Bacterial or Viral infection? Why was it fatal? Today it is considered a cosmetic problem, caused by hormonal changes, and treated with antiperspirant. Not in the least bit deadly - so why was it fatal back then?
