I attended medical school for one year. I passed all my courses except for one (it's pass/fail) and they wanted me to repeat the year. I was not expelled, just put on probation. I have made the decision to leave and pursue law instead as I've been treated very poorly at that school. How badly will my medical school record reflect on my application? I want to try to get into a first tier school.

Law school admissions are based primarily on your undergraduate GPA and your LSAT results. However, what happened in med school will be a factor, especially at the top tier law schools, where admissions are very competitive.

You're going to need to address this in your application, so think through it now. What happened? Why did you fail?

Importantly, why is it that 1) one setback (albeit major) caused you to throw away your dreams of being a doctor, and 2) why law school? If medicine was what you thought was your calling, why law school?

You need solid answers to those questions, and what you expressed here is not satisfactory. No law school will admit you if the reason you want to go there is because you were treated poorly at med school. No. You need to convince them that law is your true direction. So start thinking through this now, so you can prepare something solid re: essays.

You'll need to sell yourself.
