I want to tow a small boat or trailer with my '04 Impala. Is it possible to install a hitch on it? If so how difficult is it?
Well "TIFF," I didn't say I was putting it in a car show did I????

You can install a hitch on virtually anything. As for difficulty, go to a place that does it professionally and just ask for a price. It is very easy that way, go shopping while it is done.

Most of the do-it-yourself hitches are not meant to be used regularly. Then be sure the wiring is compatible with the trailer and happy hauling!
 
Yes. Pull up J C Whitney catalogue on your computer. It shows a type 2 hitch for your car. It bolts on, no welding needed. Someone can probably bolt it on in about 2 or 3 hours plus a sixpak of his favorite beverage.
You could probably order one from your parts store if you don't want to order from J C Whitney.
 
It is very possible. Just make sure you do not exceed the Impala towing capacity.

I have a hitch on my Malibu. It has a towing capacity of only 1000 pounds so I need to be aware of how much I load onto my trailer.

I believe the Impala uses similar wiring for the tail lights as my Malibu. This is not standard wiring. You need a special converter for the trailer lights. For my car it cost an additional $25 for the converter.

Your Impala also has a maximum trailer towing capacity of 1000 pounds. So make sure the weight of the boat, motor, trailer, and all of the gear in the boat do not exceed 1000 pounds. See the link below. Towing capacity for your car is about 1/3 the way down the page.

I got my hitch installed by a local auto parts store. Even though I live in a small town, there were several local shops that install trailer hitches. Use the Yellow pages and call around for the best deal. I recommend spending a few extra dollars more and have the hitch and wiring professionally installed.
