mechanics.... How much will it cost to replace a head gasket?

Been informed by my garage thet my head gasket has gone allowing water into the engine - the EMS then stalls the engine.

Model is a 95 Peugeot 406 1.9 Turbo Diesel

A rough estimate will do as i understand there may be more damage inside to pistons cylinders etc... How much just to check & replace the head gasket
