10. A body of weight 40N hangs from a string attached to a point on a vertical wall. The string will break when the tension exceeds 50N. If the body is pulled away from the wall by a horizontal force of magnitude P, what angle does the string make with the vertical and what is the value of P?

12. A particle of mass m kg is supported by two light inextensible strings inclined at angles a and b to the horizontal. Find the tension in each string (T1 and T2) when:
(a) M = 0.5, a = b = 12 degrees.
(b) M = 0.5, a = 10 degrees and b = 12 degrees.
(c) Weight of the particle is 2N, a = 6 degrees and b = 7 degrees.

17. A string is threaded through a smooth ring of weight W and is tied to two points A and B on the same horizontal level. The ring is pulled by a horizontal force of magnitude P so that the two parts of the string are inclined at angles of 60 degrees and 30 degrees respectively to the vertical.
(a) Draw 2 possible configurations which fit the given facts.
(b) Show that in each case the tension in the string is
W (√3 – 1)
(c) Find the two possible value of P.

Answer 10: 36. 9 degrees & 30N.

Answer 12: (a) 14.1N, 14.1N (b) 12.8N, 12.9N (c) 8.82N, 8.84N.

Answer 17: (b) P = Wb/a (c) Case 1: P = W (2 - √3), &
Case 2: P = W.
