Meaningful Mainstream Music

For the longest time I've been very satisfied with independent music, but I am now required to listen to more mainstream stuff. I don't listen to the radio and have no idea what good mainstream music is out. I want meaningful lyrics that deal with issues greater than simple relationship issues (and the like) and obviously good, clear vocals and instrumentation.

Can OT help me out on expanding my music library?
 
Issues greater than relationship issues? I dunno, I thought that's what indie music was all about...

What kind of music did you listen to before mainstream?

and why are you being forced to listen to mainstream?
