Mazda RX-8 engine reliability / life span?

I have heard that rotary engines have short life spans and need to be rebuilt every 60 or so thousand miles is this true with the RX-8? How many miles can you get out of the motor before it needs to be rebuilt? Is it expensave to take it to a rotary machanic to get this done? Thanks
