Mazda Protege Low RPM When Braking?

2000 Protege SE 1.6 Litre, when i am stopping at a light my rpm will dip to 100 and the car will nearly stall. Ive replaced the spark plugs recently. The car has always had a low idle around 500. This only happens when i am braking after a few seconds the rpm returns to normal. However you do fell a kick when the rpm is that low.
 
I used to have a mazda protege and mine did that for about aweek, then it just died on me one day at the red light. The mechanic said that it had jumped time and that I needed a new radiator.
