Mazda Protege 2001 with 178000 miles?

I am looking at a 2001 Mazda Protege with 178000 miles on it. The car looks like it was very well taken care of, drives well, clean, no damage. My hesitation is the mileage. How many miles can you put on a car before it is done for? I am looking at this car for my teen daughter, I want a car that will last approx. 3 to 5 years with little up keep. Will Mazda's go well over 200,000 before dying?
 
Mazda's have been known to go well over 300K if properly taken care of. That is high for an 8 yr old car. But if it checks out it should be ok. But consider this as a parent, if the high mileage makes you feel uneasy about a cars reliability, then don't get it. Last thing you want is Jr in the middle of nowhere broke down with no one to help. Spend a little more on a lower mileage car & she can drive it well into her college years & beyond.
